Readwise Return and Refund Policy
This policy explains when you can get a refund or a replacement, and how to ask for one, for:
- Readwise subscriptions;
- ebooks and audiobooks (Digital Content) you buy from Readwise Bookshop; and
- print books you buy from Readwise Bookshop.
It is part of the Terms of Service. Digital Content you receive from a Partner Publisher through “Read on Readwise” follows that publisher’s refund policy, as described in “Read on Readwise” titles.
Nothing in this policy limits any right to a refund that you have under consumer protection law.
1. Subscriptions
Eligibility
We build our apps to help people read better. If they aren’t working for you, tell us why. We review every subscription refund request and decide each one case by case, except where the law requires a refund.
If you cancel a yearly subscription before the year is up, we refund the unused part of the year when you ask.
If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom and pay us directly, you can cancel a new subscription within 14 days of its first payment, without giving a reason, and get a full refund.
Refund requests
Email us at hello@readwise.io and tell us what happened.
If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, that store took the payment, and only it can refund it. Ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, or ask Google from your Google Play order history.
Cancellation and plan changes
Canceling does not refund the billing period you already paid for, except as described in Eligibility above. We do not refund anything automatically when you cancel. Your plan ends when we issue the refund. Deleting your account cancels a subscription you pay us directly, under these same rules.
If switching plans leaves a balance on your account, we apply it to future subscription payments instead of refunding it.
How to cancel or change your plan, and when it takes effect, is described in Cancellation and plan changes in the Terms of Service.
2. Ebooks and audiobooks
Eligibility
You can get a refund or a replacement for Digital Content you bought from Readwise Bookshop if:
- you ask within 5 business days of buying it, and you have not read or listened past the length of a free sample (usually the first chapter or 10% of the book, whichever is shorter);
- the file does not download, does not open, or has another technical problem we cannot fix;
- the title is materially different from its description;
- the title is not accessible to you, and we cannot offer a format that works for you; or
- we have to remove the title from your library, for example because the publisher withdrew it, and we cannot let you keep your copy or replace it.
The 5-day limit applies only to the first case. Outside these cases, we may still give a refund at our discretion.
Refund requests
Email us at hello@readwise.io with your order number, the title, and a short description of the problem. Include a screenshot if you can. We may ask you for more information.
If your request qualifies, we replace the title or refund it. When we refund a title, we remove it from your library and your devices.
3. “Read on Readwise” titles
Eligibility
If you got a title from a Partner Publisher’s storefront, from a redemption code, or from a publisher’s “Read on Readwise” link, the publisher sold it to you. The publisher’s own policy decides refunds and replacements, and we cannot override it. See Partner Publisher fulfillment in the Bookshop Terms.
Refund requests
If the title is missing from your library or will not open, see If a title does not appear in the Bookshop Terms first. Contact the publisher or whoever gave you the code. Include your order or code number, the title, and a short description of the problem. If the publisher approves a refund, the publisher pays it, and we remove the title from your library when the publisher tells us to. If the publisher sends you to us, forward their written instructions to hello@readwise.io.
4. Print books
Eligibility
We replace or refund a print book, and pay any return shipping, if:
- it arrives damaged, defective, or is not what you ordered, and you tell us within 30 days of delivery; or
- it does not arrive, and you tell us within 30 days of the shipping date.
Refund requests
Email us at hello@readwise.io with your order number and, for a damaged or wrong book, a photo.
5. Wrong charges
If you think we charged you incorrectly, for example twice for the same title or billing period, email us at hello@readwise.io within 60 days of the charge, or within any longer period the law requires. We will look into it and refund any amount we charged in error.
6. What we do not refund
Unless the law requires it, we do not refund:
- the rest of a monthly billing period after you cancel, except as described in Subscriptions;
- promotional credits or codes;
- Digital Content read or listened to past the length of a free sample, except in the cases described in Ebooks and audiobooks; or
- print books, except in the cases described in Print books.
We may refuse refund requests that are abusive, repeated, or made in bad faith.
7. How refunds are paid
| Where the money goes | We refund your original payment method. For Readwise Bookshop purchases, we can give you store credit instead if you prefer. If you paid with store credit, you get store credit back. |
|---|---|
| How long it takes | Refunds usually reach your account within 5 to 10 business days. Your bank or card issuer may take longer, especially for international payments. Refunds from the Apple App Store or Google Play follow that store’s timing. |
| Partial refunds | If only part of a purchase qualifies, we may refund just that part, such as one title from a larger order or the unused part of a yearly plan. |
| Store credit | Store credit can be used only in Readwise Bookshop, and it may expire. |
8. Disputes
Disputes about refunds follow the Terms of Service, including the limits on liability and the arbitration agreement. See Indemnification, warranties, liabilities, and disputes.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as our products, practices, or legal obligations change. When we do, we update the “Last updated” date at the top. If a change is material, we tell you before it takes effect, for example in the app, on our website, or by email.
A change does not affect a purchase you already made. If a change would reduce a refund you are entitled to, the version in effect when you bought applies.
10. Contact information
For questions about returns and refunds, email us at hello@readwise.io. Our mailing address is in Contact information in the Terms of Service.
