Readwise Bookshop Terms
These Bookshop Terms apply when you buy ebooks, audiobooks, or print books from Readwise Bookshop, or when you read a title you bought from a Partner Publisher. They are part of the Terms of Service, and terms not defined here have the meaning given there.
1. Product descriptions, pricing, and availability
We try to keep each book’s details, cover, sample, and price accurate, but mistakes happen. If something looks wrong, let us know at hello@readwise.io.
Title descriptions
We rely on information from publishers and distributors. We do not warrant that each description is perfect, current, or complete. If a title you buy is materially different from its description, your only recourse is a refund or replacement under the Return and Refund Policy.
Pricing and currency
Prices are displayed in U.S. dollars unless we show a local currency. Applicable sales tax, VAT, or GST is calculated at checkout based on your billing address, or your shipping address for print books.
We may change prices at any time before you complete checkout.
Occasionally, a small number of titles may be mispriced. If the correct price is higher than what you were shown, we will either ask how you would like to proceed or cancel the order and issue a full refund.
Promotions, discounts, and pre-orders
Store credit codes and promotional prices are valid only for the period we state. We may limit quantities or end a promotion at any time.
When pre-orders are available, we will not charge you when you place one. We will charge your payment method when the title is released, at the lower of the price shown at checkout and the price on release day. If the release is delayed, we will let you know as soon as possible. If it is canceled, we will not charge you.
Payment processing
Bookshop payments are processed by Stripe, as described in Subscriptions and billing in the Terms of Service.
Territorial rights
Readwise Bookshop and the titles we distribute are available only in territories where we hold the necessary rights. We currently sell ebooks and audiobooks only to customers with a U.S. billing address, and we ship print books only to the United States and Canada.
Publishers may restrict individual titles to specific countries or regions. If you move, travel, or hide your location, you may not be able to buy some titles or keep accessing them.
Sanctions compliance
You may not use Readwise Bookshop if you, your location, or your payment method is subject to trade or economic sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, or other applicable authorities. Purchasing titles on behalf of sanctioned persons or entities is likewise prohibited.
Blocked access
We may block access, cancel orders, or refund purchases that break territorial restrictions or sanctions. If you believe we have blocked access to you in error, please contact hello@readwise.io for review.
Accessibility
Readwise Books and Readwise Bookshop are designed for everyone who loves to read. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA and the European Accessibility Act.
Our apps support screen readers and adjustable text. Where publishers supply EPUB 3 files with proper semantic markup, we preserve those features (headings, landmarks, alt-text) in our reader.
If a title you buy is not accessible, email us at hello@readwise.io. We will try to fix it, or refund you under the Return and Refund Policy. Your feedback helps us remove any remaining barriers.
2. Use and limitations of Digital Content
When you buy or download an ebook or audiobook through Readwise Bookshop, or get one through a Partner Publisher (collectively, “Digital Content”), you receive a personal, non‑commercial, revocable license to enjoy that title within the Readwise apps, subject to the limitations described in these Bookshop Terms.
Digital Content is made available to you under a limited license. Ownership of the underlying work remains with the publisher or other rightsholder.
This is standard across the industry, and our agreements with publishers require it.
Your purchased titles do not depend on a Readwise subscription. They stay in your Readwise Books library on any plan, or with no plan, for as long as you have a Readwise account, subject to Withdrawal and updates below. If you delete your account, you lose access to them.
What you may do
- Read or listen to the title on the Readwise apps and website.
- Download a local encrypted copy for offline use in the Readwise apps.
- Highlight passages and add notes. Your highlights are also saved to your Readwise Highlights library, up to the length the publisher’s DRM requirements allow.
- Sync your reading position, highlights, and notes across your own devices.
What you may not do
- Resell, lend, gift, or sublicense Digital Content, except via Readwise’s official gifting feature (when available).
- Print, copy, record, or extract any portion of the content.
- Share, post, or distribute a title (or substantial excerpts) on the internet or local network.
- Use screen‑scraping or automated tools to copy text or audio beyond the in‑app quotation feature.
Device limits
You may access each purchased title on up to 6 personal devices (phone, tablet, e‑reader, or computer) associated with your Readwise account at any given time. If you open it on a 7th device, the device you added first loses access to that title. You can have a title open on one device at a time.
Withdrawal and updates
From time to time, a publisher may withdraw a title, release an updated edition, or impose new territorial restrictions. If we must revoke access to Digital Content you have already purchased, we will either:
- let you keep the copy you have already downloaded,
- replace it with an updated file, or
- refund you in full.
Reservation of rights
Except for the limited license above, all intellectual‑property rights in Digital Content remain with the publisher or other rightsholder. Any use not expressly allowed here is prohibited.
DRM-free Digital Content
Some Digital Content is offered DRM-free. DRM (Digital Rights Management) is technology that limits how a file can be copied, shared, or moved between devices. DRM-free titles have none of those restrictions. For these titles, the device limits and technical restrictions in this section do not apply. You may read, copy, and transfer the file across your personal devices using the software of your choice.
The license terms still apply. You may not resell or publicly distribute the content, and the rightsholder’s copyright in the underlying work remains in effect.
3. Order fulfillment and returns
We deliver digital and physical items separately.
Digital Content orders
Once payment is authorized, Digital Content is delivered by secure download or streaming. Fulfillment is complete when the file is first made available to your account. If a download fails, contact hello@readwise.io. Replacements and refunds are covered by the Return and Refund Policy.
Print book orders
Print orders ship from our service providers via the carrier and service level you select at checkout. An order may be split into multiple shipments. Each shipment is treated as a separate contract of carriage for risk‑of‑loss purposes. Title and risk of loss pass to you when we hand your package to the carrier.
Delivery dates are estimates. Readwise is not liable for delays once a package is in transit.
If your package arrives damaged or goes missing in transit, contact hello@readwise.io. Replacements and refunds are covered by the Return and Refund Policy.
Customs, duties, and import restrictions
For international shipments, you are the importer of record and are responsible for any customs duties, VAT, GST, or brokerage fees. Local import laws may restrict certain items; compliance is your responsibility.
Fulfillment service providers
We may use service providers, such as printers, shipping companies, and digital delivery services, to fulfill your order. By accepting these Bookshop Terms, you allow us to send them the data they need to complete it.
Order returns
All refund and exchange requests are governed by the Return and Refund Policy.
4. Partner Publisher fulfillment (“Read on Readwise”)
Some publishers (each, a “Partner Publisher”) have agreements with Readwise that allow their customers to read titles purchased or redeemed on the publisher’s own storefront through our Service.
Current Partner Publishers include HarperCollins, HarperCollins UK, Harlequin, Mills & Boon, and HarperCollins Christian Publishing. This list may change as we add or remove Partner Publishers.
How it works
- Purchase or redeem on the publisher site. You buy Digital Content (or receive a promotional code) on a Partner Publisher’s storefront.
- Order confirmation. The publisher’s confirmation email or website includes a “Read on Readwise” or similarly named access link button.
- Account creation or linking. Clicking that button securely transfers limited order data to Readwise and either:
- creates a new Readwise account for you, or
- links the purchase to your existing Readwise account (if the email addresses match).
- Immediate access. The title is added to your Readwise Books library so you can read or listen using our apps and benefit from all reading features.
If a title does not appear
If a title from a Partner Publisher does not appear in your Readwise Books library, or it will not open, email us at hello@readwise.io. Include the email address you used on the publisher’s site and your order or code number. We fix access problems. Refunds stay with the publisher, as described below.
Data we receive
To give you access, the Partner Publisher shares limited order information with us. What we receive, and how we use it, is set out in Readwise Bookshop in the Privacy Policy.
Billing, returns, and refunds
Because the transaction happens on the Partner Publisher’s site, billing, cancellations, chargebacks, and refunds are handled by that publisher. See “Read on Readwise” titles in the Return and Refund Policy.
Merging accounts
If Partner Publisher sign-ups leave you with more than one Readwise account, you can ask us to merge them. Merging is permanent. Titles from a Partner Publisher still follow that publisher’s terms of sale.
Liability regarding Partner Publishers
Readwise is not responsible for any acts or omissions of a Partner Publisher, including pricing errors, fulfillment delays, data‑handling practices, or refund policies. Your only recourse for billing, pricing, and refund issues with a Partner Publisher purchase lies with that publisher, except where liability cannot be limited under applicable law. For more details, see Indemnification, warranties, liabilities, and disputes in the Terms of Service.
