Since its 1925 publication, Manhattan Transfer has been widely recognized as a landmark in American modernism both for its jaundiced portrayal of the American Dream and for its experimentation with the novel form. Clear, factual annotations by the world's leading expert on Dos Passos's fiction guides readers through the novel's dense representation of life in New York City in the roaring twenties.
Manhattan Transfer: An Annotated Edition is now available in Open Access on Project MUSE
John Dos Passos (1896–1970) was a writer, painter, and political activist. His service as an ambulance driver in Europe at the end of World War I led him to write Three Soldiers in 1919, the first in a series of works that established him as one of the most prolific, inventive, and influential American writers of the twentieth century, writing over forty books, including plays, poetry, novels, biographies, histories, and memoirs.
