"Perilous Beginnings: The Unbelievable Story of Growing Up with My Father's Lust for Adventure" is a vivid memoir of an extraordinary childhood shaped by risk, ingenuity, and sheer nerve. Set in a time when safety was a distant second to curiosity, the author recounts harrowing misadventures and close calls that most would scarcely believe, yet all are true. From treacherous climbs and wild expeditions to improvised inventions and last-second escapes, each chapter reveals the unpredictable life of a boy swept along by his father's relentless thirst for the next thrill. But this isn't just a collection of wild stories, it's a deeply human look at how resilience is forged, how love can look like chaos, and how a child learns to navigate a world where danger is just part of the landscape. Told with warmth, humor, and unflinching honesty, "Perilous Beginnings" invites readers to relive a youth both terrifying and unforgettable. For anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to grow up in the wake of a restless dreamer, or has lived it themselves, this book is a tribute to both the wildness of adventure and the quiet wisdom that often follows.
Maine-based writers Sharon Lee and Steve Miller teamed up in the late 1980s to bring the world the story of Kinzel, an inept wizard with a love of cats, a thirst for justice, and a staff of true power.
In the decades since, until Steve's death in 2024, the Lee-and-Miller writing team published over 100 works of fantastic fiction, the majority set in their genre-bending Liaden Universe(R), demonstrating their shared philosophy that fiction ought to be fun--both the reading and the writing of it.
During their long and storied career, Steve and Sharon were celebrated as guests of honor at more than two dozen science fiction conventions across the country and were also frequent panelist and featured speakers.
Their awards include the Prizm for Best Futuristic Romance, The Golden Duck for Best YA SF, the Reader's Choice Award for the Year's Best Military and Adventure SF of 2017, and the Edward E. Smith Memoria Award for Imaginative Fiction (the Skylark).
Sharon is continuing to work in the universe she and Steve built together.
