The dogs of France, described by the British and American fanciers who were busy falling in love with them.
French Dogs - A Complete Anthology of the Breeds gathers chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1930, among them H. W. Huntington's My Dog and I (1897), J. Sidney Turner's The Kennel Encyclopaedia (1907) and Edward C. Ash's The Practical Dog Book (1930). The bat-eared bulldog was an Edwardian society craze on both sides of the Atlantic; the poodle was still understood as a working water dog, not a salon ornament; and the spaniels were shooting dogs first and last.
Points, temperament, working ability, celebrated dogs and their pedigrees are set out for each breed, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
