Six small companions - two of them thousands of years old, one of them brand new to the ring.
The Toy Dog Vol. I - A Complete Anthology of the Breeds covers the Chihuahua, the Griffon Bruxellois, the Italian Greyhound, the Japanese Chin, the Maltese and the Miniature Black and Tan Terrier, in chapters taken from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1935, among them H. W. Huntington's My Dog and I (1897), Arthur Craven's Dogs of the World (1931) and Walter Hutchinson's Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia (1935).
The little white dog of the Mediterranean was known to Roman writers; the Chihuahua reached the British and American rings only in the early twentieth century - which is why some of these chapters read as settled orthodoxy and others as first-generation advocacy.
