A Complete History Of England

Power, faith, and empire collide in one of the 18th century's grand narratives of England. The stakes for England rise. In Volume XII of "A Complete History of England: From the Descent of Julius Caesar, to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, 1748", Tobias Smollett, famed novelist and historian, continues his sweeping chronicle from the Roman conquest of Britain down to the settlement of Europe after the War of the Austrian Succession. Blending political insight with a storyteller's pace, he traces the fortunes of the British monarchy and politics through courts, parliaments and revolutions, always attentive to England's wars and diplomacy in the wider European theatre. Conceived as an English history reference book yet written with vivid narrative energy, this classic English historical chronicle speaks equally to students, researchers and British history buffs drawn to the long arc from England 55 BC to 1748 and the early Georgian era England history. Smollett's history stands beside David Hume's England history and anticipates Thomas Macaulay's Whig history, offering an 18th-century view of liberty, empire and national character that remains essential reading for historians and general readers alike. For those building a complete history of England collection, it is more than context: a voice from the age it describes, reflecting judgements, prejudices and hopes in its account of the kingdom's rise. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
