An English Learner's Adaptation of the Story by Arthur Conan Doyle Includes Glossary and Exercises
Can science explain every mystery? What happens when facts and faith collide? Is there always a logical answer, or do some questions remain beyond human understanding?
Explore one of Arthur Conan Doyle's most unusual and thought-provoking novels while improving your English through an engaging reading experience.
The Land of Mist (Level B1) has been carefully adapted for intermediate English learners, allowing you to enjoy this fascinating classic in clear, natural English. While best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote stories that explored spirituality, belief, and the search for truth. This novel offers readers a different side of the famous author, combining mystery, investigation, and philosophical ideas in a compelling narrative.
The story follows Professor Challenger, the brilliant but stubborn scientist first introduced in The Lost World. Determined to rely only on evidence and reason, Challenger finds himself drawn into a series of extraordinary events that challenge his deepest convictions. Alongside journalists, researchers, and investigators, he encounters mysterious phenomena that seem impossible to explain through science alone. As the evidence grows stronger, every discovery forces the characters to reconsider what they believe about life, death, and the unknown.
Rather than relying on horror or supernatural thrills, The Land of Mist invites readers to explore questions that have fascinated people for generations. The novel combines intellectual debate, personal discovery, and suspense while encouraging readers to think critically about truth, skepticism, and the limits of human knowledge. Its themes remain relevant today, making it both an entertaining story and a stimulating work of classic literature.
Designed specifically for CEFR Level B1, this adaptation makes the novel accessible without losing the atmosphere and ideas of the original. Complex Victorian language has been replaced with clear, modern English while preserving the plot, characters, and literary style that have made Arthur Conan Doyle one of the world's most celebrated authors.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859. He trained to be a doctor at Edinburgh University and eventually set up a medical practice in Southsea. During the quiet periods between patients, he turned his hand to writing, producing historical novels such as Micah Clarke and adventure yarns including The Lost World, as well as four novels and fifty-six stories involving his most celebrated creations, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Doyle was knighted in 1902. In later life he devoted much of his time to his belief in Spiritualism, using his writing and celebrity as a means of providing funds to support activities in this field. He died in 1930.
