The term radicalism has become widespread today, especially within Western society, where the finger of blame is often pointed toward the so‑called "closed‑minded" individual who seems eager to blow up the world in vengeance against all who differ from his creed. Such a perception, however, reflects a profoundly superficial understanding of what Islamic radical thought actually entails.
When engaging with adherents of Islamic fundamentalist ideology, we must not confine ourselves to the outward appearance of the body; rather, we should ask Christ to open to us the depths of the heart-just as He did with Saul of Tarsus, later known as the Apostle Paul. For Saul was "breathing threats and murder" against the Church (Acts 9:1), yet the Lord transformed that anger into a deep and abiding love the moment he encountered the radiant light of Christ on the road to Damascus. How many fundamentalists today are in need of our prayers and patient endurance more than our judgment and condemnation.
This calls for a posture of humility and discernment: to see beyond labels, to listen before we speak, and to recognize that transformation is possible even in the most hardened hearts. History bears witness that those once deemed irredeemable can become instruments of peace and reconciliation. Our task, then, is not to demonize but to intercede; not to retaliate but to reconcile; not to fear but to faith-trusting that the same light that changed Saul can illuminate any soul willing to turn from darkness to truth.
