A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle is the legendary first mystery featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. In this landmark detective novel, readers meet the brilliant, eccentric Holmes and the loyal Watson as they begin one of the most famous partnerships in literary history.

When a man is found dead in an abandoned London house, with no obvious wound and a mysterious word written nearby, Scotland Yard is baffled. Holmes, however, sees what others miss. Through razor-sharp observation, logic, and deduction, he follows a trail that leads from the foggy streets of Victorian London to a shocking story of revenge, obsession, and long-buried secrets.

Fast-paced, atmospheric, and brilliantly constructed, A Study in Scarlet introduced the world to the methods that would define the modern detective story. Every clue matters. Every detail speaks. And only Sherlock Holmes can read the truth hidden in plain sight.

This edition is prepared for clear, comfortable reading while preserving the suspense, wit, and historical character of Conan Doyle's original text. For readers of classic mysteries, detective fiction, Victorian crime stories, and the enduring world of Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet is an essential beginning - the case that started a legend.

Arthur Conan Doyle

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859. He trained to be a doctor at Edinburgh University and eventually set up a medical practice in Southsea. During the quiet periods between patients, he turned his hand to writing, producing historical novels such as Micah Clarke and adventure yarns including The Lost World, as well as four novels and fifty-six stories involving his most celebrated creations, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Doyle was knighted in 1902. In later life he devoted much of his time to his belief in Spiritualism, using his writing and celebrity as a means of providing funds to support activities in this field. He died in 1930.
