The gun dog that became the nation's favourite - caught here in the years when it was still, first and last, a working retriever.
The Golden Retriever - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers the early writing on the breed from the rare kennel books in our library. The breed was recognised by the Kennel Club in 1913, initially as the Retriever, Golden or Yellow, and took its present name only in 1920 - so the literature is entirely of the twentieth century, and every chapter here describes a shooting dog rather than a family one.
Points, coat, temperament, water-work and drive, the celebrated dogs of the day and their pedigrees are all set out, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
