Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was the master impresario of English Romanticism -- an enormously erudite and tireless critic, lecturer, and polemicist who almost single-handedly created the intellectual climate in which the Romantic movement was received and understood. He was also, in poems such as 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,' 'Christabel,' and 'Kubla Khan.' the most uncanny, surreal, and startling of the great English poets.
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), working in close collaboration with William Wordsworth (1770-1850), revolutionized English poetry by the use of ordinary language and direct observation of nature. His work in literary criticism, philosophy, and theology was almost equally influential. His children Hartley (1796-1849), Derwent (1800-1883), and Sara (1802-1852) inherited much of his poetic ability, which could also be seen in several of his other relatives.
