A keepsake miscellany for the dog-minded: essays, anecdotes and verse on life with a dog, set among vintage photographs of one lamb-like Northumbrian terrier.
The Vintage Dog Scrapbook gathers the warm, funny and occasionally rueful writing that dog people have always produced about their own kind - pieces on loyalty and mischief, on courage and cowardice, on the old dog by the fire - and prints it alongside photographs of the Bedlington drawn from rare breed volumes in our library. It is the writing, not the breed, that carries the text; the pictures do the rest.
Named for the Northumberland mining town where it was fixed, and long the poacher's and the miner's companion, the Bedlington has the outline of a lamb and the disposition of a terrier. Anyone who keeps one, or grew up beside one, will recognise both here.
