England waits in dread of invasion. Along the wild southern shore, where smugglers run their cargoes by moonlight and the downs roll black against the sea, a brooding house upon the cliffs has become a nest of treachery. Within its walls a charming, ruthless foreign agent gathers the secrets that could open the coast to a conquering army.
A headstrong young squire, chasing horse-thieves into the night, stumbles upon the house and the spirited girl held within its master’s grasp. What begins as idle curiosity hardens into something far more dangerous, for he has lost his heart to the one person standing at the very centre of the plot.
Caught between his loyalty to his country and the woman he cannot abandon, he must outwit a cunning enemy in a deadly game of signals, ambushes, and midnight betrayals—before the tide turns and the spy slips across the Channel.
