Willoughby against Morrison: the two rival strains that made the Victorian Pug, argued out by the men who bred them.
The Pug - A Complete Anthology of the Dog collects chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1861 onwards, among them John Meyrick's House Dogs and Sporting Dogs (1861), H. W. Huntington's The Show Dog (1901) and James Watson's The Dog Book (1906). Here is the thirteen-point scale by which the breed was judged - head, mask, wrinkles, trace, the black mole - and here too are the Willoughby and Morrison strains, rebuilt in the 1840s from Dutch and Viennese imports, with the warnings against a bulldog cross that every writer of the period felt obliged to give.
Celebrated dogs are discussed and pictured, pedigrees are given, and the original photographs are reproduced throughout - a full record of the breed as the Victorian fancy made it.
