With explanatory notes by Scholar and writer John Sutherland, this varied selection offers a lens into Victorian life by one of its most distinctive voices.
William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863) was a novelist and satirist. Born in Calcutta, India, Thackeray moved to England as a child following his father’s death. After finishing school, he initially looked into a career in art before turning to writing. Thackeray first achieved success through writing for the humor magazine Fraser’s, and was regarded as an equal of Dickens in his time after the publication of the classic novel Vanity Fair.
