Revolutions are made out of love for people and for place.
This was a core belief of activists and married couple James Boggs and Grace Lee Boggs. James Boggs was a worker from rural Alabama in the segregated South. Grace Lee Boggs was a philosopher from urban Rhode Island and New York City. Both found their life's work, and each other, in Detroit. James and Grace were drawn to civil rights--and the labor, social, and political organizations through which people struggled for better living conditions for all.
What they created together was more than a marriage, it was a partnership. They fought with others for fair housing, jobs, food, labor unions, urban gardens, and more to make the world a better place for all. Their wide-ranging activism spanned the second half of the twentieth century. Authors Sun Yung Shin and Mélina Mangal present the lives and ideas of James and Grace in an inspiring collection of paired poems with bold mixed-media artwork by debut picture book illustrator Leslie Barlow.
Working at the intersection of nature, literature, and culture, Mélina Mangal's writing highlights youth whose voices are rarely heard, and the people and places that inspire them to explore their world. Her books from Free Spirit include Jayden's Impossible Garden, Jayden's Secret Ingredient, and the Outside Our Window Board Books series. She is also the author of short stories and biographies for youth, including The Vast Wonder of the World: Biologist Ernest Everett Just. She won the Carter G. Woodson Book Award and was named an NCSS/CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People. Mélina also works as a school library teacher in Minnesota and enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, whether it's in her backyard or hiking in the woods.
Sun Yung Shin was adopted from Korea and was raised in the Chicago area. She is an award-winning multigenre author or editor of nine books for adults and children, including Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption, coedited with Julia Chinyere Oparah and Jane Jeong Trenka. Her latest books are Where We Come From, a picture book coauthored with Diane Wilson, Shannon Gibney, and John Coy and illustrated by Dion MBD; The Wet Hex (poems); and the essay anthology What We Hunger For: Refugee and Immigrant Stories about Food and Family. She lives in Minneapolis with her family.
