I am so flipping proudly South African... and honoured to live in the most beautiful place in the world.

🧵

And yes, even though we have so many good people doing good things in our country (believe me, there are LOADS), we still have many, many challenges. The poverty is still heartbreaking, the crime is still totally out of control and there is still corruption. Lots and lots of corruption. The water keeps being switched off, the price of electricity seems to go up every time we blink and even though we don't get as many notifications from Eskom Se Push anymore (I hope those guys are okay), many parts of our country still get switched off (hello Load Reduction).

But hey, at least some of us have started remembering our Woolies bags. And our bokke are winning again. And the world is talking about South Africa because some guy had a dream... which inspired a KPMG employee to send a really wild email to the entire company. Globally. Someone should check in on both those people.

Okay, maybe that last one is not a win. That was me digressing. Jammer Wimpie.

Friends there are good things! Just this week our relay team brought home bronze (and all the feels in their post-race interview), a man shared a powerful story of how he lost his parents, became an orphan, eventually homeless, but managed to get his doctoral degree, receiving his PhD!!! Like what?!?! And then there was a story about an entire community coming together to help a young man who suffers from a rare kidney and foot condition. They are all rallying together to help him. And a story of how Popcorn the pup got a new lease on life thanks to a group of Vets and 3D printing. Science and kindness meeting in the middle. And also, the kind strangers who found a wallet in a shop and went above and beyond to return it. Like, for reals.

There are so many good people doing good things in our country.

And that is what this post is about!

The good things.

It's about us!

The people of South Africa.

We have much to learn, and many conversations still need to be had, but jussie man, we are an incredible nation. The people of South Africa are what make it so unbelievably amazing. And South Africans really are some of the most incredible human beings on the planet!

I am thankful every morning to see the sun rise over our Africa, this beautiful place we get to call home.

I am South African. That is my heritage.

We need to stay motivated. We need to inspire others. We're in this together. Friends, the only way we'll get through this is together. And time and time again, we prove that together, there is absolutely nothing we can't achieve!

So today, I am celebrating my heritage while honouring of yours... hoping that somewhere in the middle we find a good braai together.

That's all.

Happy Heritage Day.

Okay. Love you. Bye
