How to get sh*t done (and still make it home for dinner)
Length: • 4 mins
Annotated by Tahsin Khan
Hey Tahsin Khan,
I’ve spent the last 27 years studying the most productive people in history.
It’s allowed me to easily run a group of companies that generate over $100M in revenue.
But do you want to hear the crazy part?
I’m still home to do dinner and bedtime with my kids...
I still get to do snow biking trips with my buddies...
It’s allowed me to live my life by design.
And these are the 3 strategies you can steal to get more done in 12 weeks than most people get done in 12 months.
So if you’re super overwhelmed...
You can apply these 3 strategies today to actually get sh*t done.
Strategy #1 - Set Your Boundaries
Your inbox is nothing more than a public to-do list for other people’s priority on your time.
And if you let it get out of control...
You can make the mistake of living your life by default instead of by design.
I like to use this concept called the “Eisenhower Matrix”
I use it to categorize my inbox into 4 categories...
If it’s in the “not Important, not urgent” box - send me an email.
If it’s in the “important, not urgent box” box - post it in slack or use team communication.
If it’s in the “not Important, and urgent” box - text me.
If it’s in the “important and urgent” box - give me a call.
But this is what can happen if you don’t set boundaries:
I was on a ski trip with my buddy Chad, who owns a retail store...
And he got mad at me because my 6am text woke him up.
I said, “Dude, why don’t you put your phone in do not disturb mode”?
He goes, “I wish, but I have to keep it on so I can hear my security alarm if someone breaks into my store.”
Seriously? As if no one has figured out a solution to that before.
Clearly he had no boundaries.
But it goes so much further.
You have to teach people how to treat you.
Share your preferences with your boss, clients, and friends.
Push back, tell them to use the appropriate channels.
CEOs will get NOTHING done if they respond to every request they get.
Strategy #2 - Lock in Your Calendar
I remember in my 20s my calendar was a mess...
Honestly, I didn’t even want anything in my calendar.
I just wanted to go with the flow and do what I do.
Then I realized that without any constraints, I was never getting anything done and I had no creativity.
That’s because constraints create creativity.
These are my 5 rules of scheduling to lock in my calendar:
1 - Big Things First, Small Things Last
You want to put the big rocks, the big problems, the big initiatives into your calendar first.
Then fit the smaller things around it.
2 - Schedule Following Your Energy
Some people are night owls, some people are early birds.
You know yourself better than anyone else. Schedule your tasks based on your energy.
If you’re more creative in the morning, do your creative work in the morning.
3 - Batch Similar Work
Batch all of your meetings together, all of your content creation together...
For me, I get a whole lot more done when I stay in the same headspace.
4 - Be 100% Compliant
If it’s in your calendar, do what it says.
So many people wake up and say, “I don’t feel like it today.”
Follow what you’ve designed for your life and don’t let your feelings steer you off course.
5 - Constantly Adjust
Your calendar will NEVER be perfect.
As new commitments come, as new projects pop up, adjust your calendar.
Treat it as an experiment that you’re always evolving and playing with.
Strategy #3 - Kill Your Distractions
In silicon valley, where all of the tech companies build their products...
They have doctorate degree psychologists creating software to distract you.
I’m talking about the notification sound, the colour of the notifications, literally everything.
Their ENTIRE job is to pull you back to their platform.
The average person gets 300 notifications a day.
No point in setting priorities if you don’t have the focus and space to do deep work.
I like to tell people this:
Ambitious people buy skills, lazy people buy distractions
The solution? design a strategy for your distractions.
I like to call this my “World Interface System” to make sure I kill my distractions.
1 - Turn Off Notifications
I mean everything, all my calls are on mute except for my wife.
Some people will freak out when they hear that...
But your goals are so much more important than your distractions.
2 - Set Check in Times
So now instead of letting the apps buzz and notify you...
Set times during the day to check in with your messages.
You control when to respond instead of the notification taking your focus.
3 - Delegate Your Distractions
This one is more of an advanced move...
I have my Executive Assistant check my emails for me.
She filters out what's not important, which lets me stay focused.
Because it’s so much easier to avoid the dragon, than to slay it.
