I have always suspected that scientists don't understand the division of labor between pure structural causal model specification and estimation/inference of causal parameters or understand this from books such as #BookOfWhy.
Estimation can be enormously difficult.
Friday’s #causal workshop @NICHD_NIH by @LauraBBalzer and #JenniferAhern was mind bending. After reading the #BookofWhy this summer, I thought the biggest challenge for #causal inference was specifying the correct structural causal model, and the rest was simple estimation.
I see it more as a communication issue, rather than disciplinary barrier. From afar, scientists might think all folks who do quantitative reasoning are the same & interchangeable. From afar, scientists think all biologists are the same!
