Even though everyone has access to mobile phones, the PC processor remains the computational hub of modern life: nearly 2 billion people turn on their personal computers for work and study every day. The processors in these computers, along with hundreds of millions of PC processors installed in data centers and supercomputers, are invisibly computing everything in the data world, from recommending videos and recording stock market transactions, to analyzing battlefield intelligence and identifying the next bombing target.
Over the past 20 years, the competitive landscape of this crucial infrastructure has remained largely static.
Following the last chip war, several leading companies firmly secured their positions. Most of the time, Intel, controlling over two-thirds of the market, determined whether the CPU's computing power would increase by 8% or 10% the following year. NVIDIA was the go-to for rendering images in the virtual world, while Qualcomm decided how signals would propagate through the air. Three years ago, the launch of Apple's M1 chip momentarily disrupted the calm with its unimaginably high performance. However, its success was largely attributed to its financial strength - indeed, it seemed only the wealthiest companies could produce superior chips.
This situation was almost completely rewritten in the past week. It reiterated a simple truth to the world: in the pure business world, technology will always advance, monopolies cannot last forever, and the previous calm in the chip market was merely a waiting period for technological accumulation.
Over the past seven days, a chip war revolving around personal computers has gradually taken shape in the U.S. market. At least six companies, each worth hundreds of billions of dollars, are involved, launching attacks on companies with which they originally had no competitive relationship, and even on their partners.
On October 25, Qualcomm released the laptop chip Snapdragon X Elite, claiming its performance surpasses that of Apple's M2 Max and Intel's equivalent processors. They also stated their intention to provide "leading solutions to compete with Apple" for other laptop manufacturers worldwide.
On the same day, Apple warmed up for its new product launch, rolling out the new M3 series processor this Tuesday. With its unparalleled 3-nanometer technology, it has reset the performance benchmark for laptops.
Meanwhile, several US media outlets reported on new plans from Nvidia and AMD: they aim to develop high-performance, low-power laptop chip solutions, planning to hit the market within two years to compete with Apple and Qualcomm.
A new competition is spreading to markets of the same level. NVIDIA plans to meet all needs from in-car entertainment to autonomous driving with its latest automotive chip, DRIVE Thor. Tesla, on the other hand, is following Apple's footsteps, replacing the chips in its own products one by one with its own.
A chip war that will determine the future form of computing is breaking out, and the battlefield has returned to Silicon Valley.
Unified Direction: Mobile Chips Counterattack Computers, Cars, Servers
Whether it's Apple's M3 series or Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite, their structures don't resemble traditional computer chips, but rather look more like mobile chips - albeit a bit larger in size.
SoC(System On a Chip,片上系统)——CPU、GPU、内存、控制器等处理器内核都被集成在一个芯片封装里。
In traditional computers, components such as CPUs, graphics cards, and memory sticks produced by different companies are sent to factories to be soldered onto circuit boards. The processors of Apple and Qualcomm are SoCs (System On a Chip) - CPUs, GPUs, memory, controllers, and other processor cores are all integrated into a single chip package. Most of the production work can be completed in TSMC's factories.
Similarly, Nvidia's next-generation car chip, Thor, has also shifted to SoC design. The next breakthrough target is server chips, which have higher performance requirements.
The turning point occurred at the end of 2020, when Apple released the M1 chip with an SoC design. Initially, Apple only used the new processor in entry-level computers, but its performance had already caught up with the top-of-the-line Intel processor computers from the previous year, and the battery life was several hours longer.
For the previous 14 years, Apple had been using Intel's CPU on Mac computers. Starting from 2015, the performance improvement of Intel processors fell into single-digit percentages. This was once seen as the inevitable result of Moore's Law coming to an end.
"Inside an SoC, the distance between computing units such as the CPU, GPU, and memory is no more than 1 centimeter. They can communicate directly through the wafer. Compared to the traditional method of using external PCB circuit boards, this greatly enhances information transmission efficiency and reduces power consumption," says Dr. Wang Bo, author of "A Brief History of Chips".
If we liken completing a task on a computer to cooking a meal, the traditional computer's scheduling chip is like going to different supermarkets and stalls to buy ingredients, then cooking. An SoC is like getting ingredients from a single refrigerator to cook. The M1 chip has even more "ingredients". Apple has customized specific computing units for a series of specific purposes such as artificial intelligence, audio and video encoding, encrypted storage, etc., to solve common problems more quickly. These functions all need to cooperate with the CPU, making it quite necessary to shorten the distance of information transmission.
In the second year, Apple successively released the improved M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra. Wired magazine described these products as "keeping Moore's Law alive."
Intel also recognized early on the industry's shift towards SoC and launched the SoC platform Atom in 2012, suitable for smartphones and netbooks. However, its dependence on Intel's x86 architecture and its own chip foundries made it struggle in the competition with the Arm architecture supported by companies like Apple and Qualcomm, plus TSMC. Eventually, it gave up trying in 2016.
"The x86 belongs to the complex instruction set, and the CPUs based on it are powerful but also consume a lot of power. The GPU is also a high-power processor. Putting them together to make an SoC, heat dissipation would be a major problem," said Wang Bo.
Moreover, the Windows laptop market has a multitude of brands and individual configuration needs are ever-changing, which to a certain extent also limits Intel. It has to provide CPUs that can meet a variety of needs at a lower price, making it difficult to iterate as quickly as Apple.
Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, also recognized the threat posed by Apple. He told his employees in early 2021, "We must provide the PC ecosystem with better products than a lifestyle company."
But Apple is not its only competitor. After the launch of the MacBook equipped with the M1 chip in 2020, Apple's market share in the laptop market doubled to 11%. The success of the M1 has made it clear to eager newcomers like Qualcomm what to do next and who to turn to.
Lowering Technical Barriers: Democratization of Chip Design, TSMC Solves Manufacturing
Looking back, it seems natural that chips on various devices have evolved into SoCs, but the process was extremely complex. From assembling a chip design team to launching the M1, Apple spent 12 years.
During this period, Apple has attracted talents who have worked in chip companies such as Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, and Imagination through high salaries and acquisitions, and step by step replaced the computing units in the chips with their own products. First, they abandoned the CPU core design publicly sold by Arm, then replaced Imagination's design with their own GPU, and developed their own specialized computing units for processing images, encoding and decoding audio and video, accelerating artificial intelligence algorithms, encrypting storage, etc. This has driven the iPhone chip to achieve a performance leap every two years, making it possible for the M1 to surpass Intel's chips.
The birth of a great product is often the end of a super-long marathon. After the release of the first-generation Mac computer and the first-generation iPhone, a large number of engineers resigned in a short period of time. Apple's founder Steve Jobs and Microsoft's founder Bill Gates (Microsoft deeply participated in the software development of the first-generation Mac) have mentioned this wave of resignations more than once in interviews to illustrate how extraordinary efforts their teams have made, and eventually worked until they were exhausted.
Apple's chip engineers have found that the end of one marathon is the start of the next.
According to The Information, the number of internal chip projects at Apple has increased from single digits to dozens over the past decade, but the number of employees has not grown at the same pace.
This week's press conference is a testament to the increasing workload of Apple's engineers. The M1 series chips come in four specifications, but Apple's engineers have only completed two full designs - the M1 and M1 Max, which were released nearly a year apart. The M1 Pro is a scaled-down version of the M1 Max, while the M1 Ultra is a combined version of the M1 Max. This week, however, Apple released three completely different designs at once - the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. This allows the M3 Pro to be smaller and cheaper, while the M3 Max can pursue ultimate performance. Apple's chips more precisely serve products at different price points, but this increases the workload of the chip team.

In an interview, an Apple chip engineer stated that in order to meet the company's rapid, stable, and substantial iterative chip demands across all product lines, Apple's chip engineers work nearly 80 hours a week. The 996 schedule, which is 72 hours a week and usually includes a lunch break, is just not enough to complete tasks on time.
According to statistics from multiple media outlets, hundreds of Apple chip engineers have resigned over the past two years. They have also spread their experience in creating high-performance processors.
In 2019, Gerard Williams III, the Senior Director of Platform Architecture at Apple's chip division, spearheaded the establishment of the chip company NUVIA. He joined Apple in 2010, after working at Arm for 12 years. During his 9 years at Apple, he led the development of the CPU for all Apple SoCs and was the chief architect of the Apple M1 Pro and M1 Max.
The other two chip experts who co-founded NUVIA with him are John Bruno and Manu Gulati, both of whom have extensive experience in the chip industry.
According to NUVIA's official website, the goal of these Apple chip veterans is to develop a more powerful CPU to handle the exponentially growing data and ever-increasing demands. Their technical path aligns with Apple's - designing a CPU core from scratch that is compatible with the Arm ecosystem.
Following the success of the M1 series, NUVIA received acquisition offers from a number of large tech companies. In 2021, Qualcomm emerged victorious from competition with companies like Microsoft, Intel, and Meta, acquiring NUVIA for $1.4 billion. The three NUVIA founders were able to earn hundreds of millions of dollars from this deal - an income higher than that of Apple's CEO, Tim Cook.
The NUVIA team, along with hundreds of employees, joined Qualcomm, with its founding team taking on executive roles within the company. In less than two years, the performance of Qualcomm's new processor has already surpassed that of Apple's M2 series.
In the past, manufacturing constraints limited a company's ability to produce high-performance chips. For most of the 60-year history of chips, controlling the chip manufacturing plant was essentially equivalent to controlling the chip itself. Intel once monopolized the chip market by exclusively owning advanced wafer factories. Even if competitors could design good chips, they were unable to manufacture them using advanced technology.
It wasn't until 2017 that cracks began to appear in the vertically integrated chip system established by Intel. Thanks to the massive iPhone orders and Apple's requirement for significant chip performance upgrades every two years, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) quickly surpassed Intel in chip manufacturing technology. That year, while TSMC was producing 10-nanometer chips, Intel was still using 14-nanometer technology. In the following years, TSMC steadily pushed forward with 7-nanometer and 5-nanometer chips, maintaining its lead.
Under the same manufacturing process, Intel's x86 architecture chips perform better than the Arm architecture commonly used in SoC chips. However, the gap in manufacturing processes has compensated for the performance shortcomings of the Arm solution. The M1 chip released by Apple in 2020 uses a 5-nanometer process, while Intel's laptop chips in the same year are still at 10 nanometers (equivalent to TSMC's 7-nanometer process in terms of transistor density).
The open foundry nature of TSMC ensures that any company wishing to manufacture chips can access top-notch manufacturing processes without significant investment. Qualcomm's X Elite followed Apple in adopting the 4-nanometer process. Although it lags behind the latest M3's 3-nanometer process, it has already surpassed other products in the M series.
Developing chips requires not only money but also the ability to continuously generate profits from the chips
Chip development requires continuous massive investment, which is why the competition is always initiated by the giants. These giants not only need experienced chip managers, but also hundreds, if not thousands, of engineering teams. Therefore, the salaries and benefits of R&D personnel and engineers constitute a significant part of the R&D investment.
Starting in 2019, Qualcomm, which was originally "only" willing to invest over 5 billion US dollars in R&D annually, has been increasing its R&D expenses by about 1 billion US dollars each year. In the 12 months leading up to the third quarter of this year, the total R&D investment has reached nearly 9 billion US dollars.
The reasons behind these companies' intense investments vary, but fundamentally, they all have a very stable "tax" revenue. This allows them the opportunity to leverage the performance improvements brought about by chip technology, generating more income and creating a virtuous cycle.
Apple sells over 200 million iPhones each year. By developing its own chips, it not only enhances the competitiveness of its products, but also takes the profits that originally belonged to the chip suppliers. At the same time, its chips are used in computers, watches, headphones, and Vision Pro.
Qualcomm relies on its vast number of patents and leading position in the mobile communication field to collect royalties from almost every smartphone, including Apple's. According to estimates by analysis agencies, for every iPhone sold, Apple has to pay Qualcomm $13 in wireless patent licensing fees and $25 in baseband chip fees. The "tax" Qualcomm collects from Apple alone nearly covers its annual research and development costs. Qualcomm then uses these fees to develop more advanced Snapdragon chips, making it indispensable to more device manufacturers.
Similarly, the surge in demand for AIGC and large models implies that computing manufacturers and AI startups will need to purchase a large number of Nvidia GPUs in the coming years. With a reliable cash flow, Nvidia can support its own CPU research and development, further advancing in the automotive and computer markets.
Even the wealthiest corporations must carefully consider their decisions once they step away from their highly related core businesses. Google, back in 2016, wanted to develop its own SoC for its Pixel phones. Subsequently, they poached SoC engineer Steve Molloy from Qualcomm to serve as the chip director, and recruited a large number of chip engineers in India.
Since the launch of the Pixel series phones seven years ago, the total global shipments have reached 37.9 million units, which is still less than the sales of iPhone in a single quarter. Google's founders have long delegated power to the CFO, and they won't provide unlimited resources without a promising return. The mass production plan for Google's self-developed Pixel chip has been postponed until 2025.
Meta is also facing challenges. In 2018, Meta formed a chip team called the Facebook Agile Silicon Team, hoping to design chips from easy to difficult, and ultimately use their self-developed chips in the Quest series of virtual reality devices. However, as Quest continued to lose money, Meta outsourced the design task of custom chips to Samsung and MediaTek in succession, and finally gave up on custom chips, opting to directly purchase Qualcomm XR chips instead.
The Meta Quest 2 is currently the best-selling XR device, selling around 10 million units a year. The initial sales of Apple's upcoming Vision Pro won't surpass it, but the chip development costs required for it have already been spread out over the annual sales of 200 million iPhones and 26 million Macs.
AI, cars, and XR, new demands, new tax opportunities
Approximately 60 years ago, a string of small towns in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in California began to be referred to as "Silicon Valley". A group of companies here promoted the application of transistors and integrated circuits, giving birth to the chip industry. Their first customers were the government and the military.
After the 1980s, with the popularization of computers and the birth of the internet, consumers and businesses replaced government agencies as Silicon Valley's largest customers. Tech companies such as Apple, Nvidia, Google, and Meta were born here. These tech giants dominated their respective industries, earning the majority of the profits, and also moved further and further away from "silicon". For a time, the most important tech companies in the United States specialized in software or the internet.
If the demand for chips only remained in existing videos, spreadsheets, and games, whether it's Apple, Qualcomm, Nvidia, or AMD, they probably wouldn't go all out. However, AI, automotive, and XR have given birth to new computing needs, and the stagnation of the consumer electronics market has intensified the urgency of competition - every company needs to squeeze out more profits.
At present, AI has given birth to some practical applications. Microsoft wants to stuff an AI assistant named "Copilot" into almost all productivity tools such as Office 365, Bing search, Outlook mail, etc.; Apple is using the Transformer model to improve the input method (it's not yet effective for Chinese); Adobe's AI tool Firefly will also be integrated into design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, etc.
However, the computational resources and costs involved in training and inferring large models are extremely exaggerated. Whether purchasing GPUs themselves or renting servers from cloud computing vendors, companies providing AI services are facing severe shortages of computational power and high operating costs. The inevitable path to the popularization of large models is to utilize the processors of every computer and every smartphone.
This is also why, from Qualcomm to Apple's product launches, they are all emphasizing that their new chips can better support the local running of large models on mobile devices. Apple claims that the M3 Max can support the operation of Transformer models with tens of billions of parameters; Qualcomm states that the first PC equipped with the Snapdragon X Elite will support local inference of models with 130 billion parameters.
In the foreseeable future, personal computers will remain the most important productivity tool. Industry research organization Counterpoint predicts that AI will inject new vitality into the PC market, which has been sluggish for many years. By 2026, the global penetration rate of AI PCs will exceed half. In this market, Apple aims to retain the customers most willing to spend money on computers with its chips, Qualcomm intends to have PC manufacturers sell more computers to pay their own taxes, and Nvidia plans to transition from GPU to CPU, taking more profits from PC manufacturers. These three companies are colliding in this space.
Another potential market demand comes from XR. It's hard to say how big this market will be, but Apple's Vision Pro, released this year, has pointed the way for other manufacturers - achieving augmented reality (AR) effects through the screen's "perspective" feature. To bring its visual experience up to the "retina" standard we're accustomed to, a single-eye screen resolution of 6K is required.
At present, Vision Pro only has 4K, and it already requires wearing an M2 chip on the head, plus an R1 chip to process sensor information in real time, with built-in fans and external batteries. Real-time rendering of complex images under 6K precision requires performance and power consumption that today's chips cannot achieve.
The demand for chip computing power in cars is also growing. With the acceleration of electrification and intelligence, as well as the popularization of smart cockpits and autonomous driving, these "data centers on wheels" have attracted a number of chip manufacturers to enter the market. Automotive chips have also shifted from the original general-purpose, dispersed single-function chips to integrated multi-function SoCs.
Qualcomm has previously introduced the 7-nanometer advanced process to automotive chips with the Snapdragon 8155. Meanwhile, Nvidia's next-generation SoC chip Thor, released last year, can reach a maximum computing power of 2000 TOPS, nearly 8 times that of its current product Orin. Qualcomm aims to participate in autonomous driving, Nvidia wants to be the main chip in cars, while Tesla does not want to rely on either of them.
The new environment is prompting these tech companies to pivot towards the battle for chips, and this battle could very well determine who will emerge as the true tech company.

In 1957, a man-made object entered space for the first time, orbiting the Earth for three weeks. People could look up and see a tiny sparkle streaking across the night sky, parallel to the stars of myth.
Such a feat transcended race and ideology, sparking joy around the globe. However, it wasn't the kind of victorious joy one might expect from a human achievement. According to political philosopher Hannah Arendt's observations at the time, people's emotions were closer to a long-awaited consolation - science had finally caught up with expectations, and "humanity had taken its first step on the path to breaking free from the prison of Earth."
People are always adjusting their expectations of the world based on technological exploration. When a science fiction writer's imagination becomes reality, it often means that technology has finally caught up with people's expectations. Or, as Arendt put it, "Technology realizes and affirms people's dreams, which are neither mad nor void."
At times like today, having a bit more dreams is better.
This is also the expectation for the launch of the TECH TUESDAY column by LatePost. We hope to regularly report on new scientific research and technological advancements, beyond the business world that LatePost usually focuses on.
These could be about the progress of a cutting-edge research, observations on a technological application, or even a tribute to some outstanding technologies, or an era.
This column will set out from the perspective of science and technology, documenting the diverse changes in the world. On this journey, we hope that readers can join us in gaining a deeper understanding of the world.
