The worst ever avian flu in the U.S. has had a devastating effect on bird populations, with more than 57 million animals dead as a result of infection or culling. More than 4,000 of those were wild birds across 48 states.

Europe and China both saw their hottest summers on record in 2022, with the entire Northern Hemisphere experiencing its second-warmest summer ever. Worldwide, it was the fifth-hottest summer (from June to August) on land since 1880, when record-keeping began.

Lakes & reservoirs in the U.S. saw record lows, unveiling everything from sunken WWII-era boats to human remains. Lake Mead hit its lowest point since 1937, Lake Powell was the lowest it’s been since its creation in the 1960s, & Utah’s Great Salt Lake also hit its lowest levels.

Rainfall records have been set in places around the world, from South America, to Australia, to Alaska. Sydney, Australia, had its rainiest year since record-keeping began in 1858, and Anchorage, Alaska, beat its annual precipitation record set more than 30 years ago.

Provinces in Pakistan saw the most rainfall they’ve ever seen in a month, causing massive flooding that left a third of the country underwater. Researchers say that warming atmospheres hold more water, increasing the intensity of precipitation.
