Think of personal care as the equivalent of getting gas on a road trip: There is never a convenient time to stop. You have to get off the freeway, sacrifice time that could be used to get closer to your destination, and spend some hard-earned money. We stop for gas because if we didn’t, the car would quite literally stop running. People, however, are more resilient than cars—we can run on empty for a while, and we punish ourselves with this resilience by pushing ourselves too far.
