Researchers conducted experiments involving strongly-held political beliefs to see what happens in the brain when evidence is presented that counters those beliefs[5]. When confronted with evidence that was counter to their beliefs, there was increased activity in the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and amygdala. These are areas of the brain that correspond to selfidentity and negative emotions; where we think about our identities and feel threatened.
